Hi there

We've been looking at bathrooms, and I want to change the toilet, to one that is a bit higher. The only thing is I don't want it to shout "disabled"at everyone.

What do other people have?

Hi Lyn

Gwenda's looks brilliant. They have a square bathroom and the loo faces the door. The builder put a 6" raised step across the rear of the room and the loo is on top of the step. The floor has been tiled (including the step) and it really does look good. It seems as if it was built that way and, of course, the loo is now at a great height for anyone with a disability. Much nicer than my seat, which attaches onto the loo.

I'm in the process of having our bathroom re-done and asked the plumber about a higher loo.

The existing seat raiser is a horrible plastic one which I can't unscrew to remove to clean the loo. I can't put the lid down either. He suggested raising the existing loo up on a plinth, but instead he's found a 500mm high (to seat) loo for about £375 plus VAT. Actually thinking about it, I didn't ought to pay VAT on it, or maybe they would argue its not specifically for a disbaled person? The other option he put to me was one of those loos that hang off the wall, similar to a basin? You can put those at whatever height you like.

hi

I agree the "disabled" loos look grim!

We have one on a plinth. Our bathroom fitters worked out the right height for me and tiled over it to match the tiles in the bathroom- it is great! you'd never know.

I remember seeing the photos when you put them up for us, Jenni. Do you have one showing the plinth, so Lynn can see how good it looks? It sounds very much like Gwenda's.

Hi Jenni

Thanks for the pics, I can print them off to show the plumber.

Tabbycat - your idea sounds good too. I don't see why you'd have to pay VAT on it. When I bought our recliner chairs, we didn't pay VAT on mine, although I'm sure lots of non-disabled people buy them too.

Love Lyn
